I don't see most Republicans calling for our country to be led by people with elite moral and intellectual virtues, except in some rarified academic contexts. Generally they try to stir up the demos just as much as Democrats, if not more; wouldn't you agree?
I see your point about the Republicans, I was just trying to imagine what people would say if something like a more direct democracy came to pass. Both parties play on the passions of the polis, but somehow maybe I hope the Democrats would be more open to more open elections. Especially considering how in the last election the Republicans seem to try to do everything they can to lower voter turnout, especially, in urban areas.
Yes, a few blocks from my house in Cincinnati there was one of those "Voter Fraud Is A Felony" billboards. It lasted only briefly, and then I saw a billboard (from a rival company) declaring "Voting Is A Right -- Not A Crime."
