Yes, working on a typewriter (writing or fixing it) can certainly be absorbing and focusing in a zone-ish way.
Today I spent several hours trying to figure out a malfunctioning backspacer on a Voss. Result: failure. But at least I got to know the machine considerably better than I had before.
The best workshop experiences, for me, are a series of small problems that lead me to greater understanding and that I manage to solve.
Whatever, the zone-ish feeling is, I crave it. Reading, writing, typing, golfing, hell even walking, just the act of being totally engrossed in something makes a lot of the other b.s. of daily life worthwhile.
